We develop an analytical methodology for optimizing phase regeneration based on phase sensitive amplification. The results demonstrate the scalability of the scheme and show the significance of simultaneous optimization of transfer function and the signal alphabet.

Avidity of yeast and hyphal forms of Candida albicans for FITC-conjugated lectins was determined by flow cytometry and digital microscopy. Yeast phase cells bound Con A, a lectin with marked affinity for mannose, irrespective of growth phase, yet demonstrated little avidity for WGA and SBA. Yeast phase cell avidity for mannose-specific lectins was characterized through determination of FITC-conjugated Con A, LcH, PSA and GNA binding and subsequent calculation of Bmax, EC50 and Hn values. Such an approach, through comparison among FITC-conjugated lectins of differing specific activities, furnishes further insight into exposed outer cell wall mannose moieties. The rank order of lectin affinity as defined by EC50 values was GNA > Con A > LcH > PSA. Values for Hn suggest that lectins predominantly bind to a single receptor class, the relative abundance of which as defined by Bmax values was PSA > GNA > Con A > LcH. Hyphal surfaces in common with yeast phase cells demonstrated marked avidity for FITC-Con A, however, fluorescence of Candida morphological forms differed significantly, indicative of varying outer cell wall mannose exposure.

Background: Cancer-related self-tests are currently available to buy in pharmacies or over the internet, including tests for faecal occult blood, PSA and haematuria. Self-tests have potential benefits (e.g. convenience) but there are also potential harms (e.g. delays in seeking treatment). The extent of cancer-related self-test use in the UK is not known. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of cancer-related self-test use. Methods: Adults (n = 5,545) in the West Midlands were sent a questionnaire that collected socio-demographic information and data regarding previous and potential future use of 18 different self-tests. Prevalence rates were directly standardised to the England population. The postcode based Index of Multiple Deprivation 2004 was used as aproxy measure of deprivation. Results: 2,925 (54%) usable questionnaires were returned. 1.2% (95% CI 0.83% to 1.66%) of responders reported having used a cancer related self test kit and a further 36% reported that they would consider using one in the future. Logistic regression analyses suggest that increasing age, deprivation category and employment status were associated with cancer-related self-test kit use. Conclusion: We conclude that one in 100 of the adult population have used a cancer-related self-test kit and over a third would consider using one in the future. Self-test kit use could alter perceptions of risk, cause psychological morbidity and impact on the demand for healthcare.

This chapter deals initially with the underlying principles of adhesion and adhesives and the understanding of interfacial behaviour. This provides a basis upon which to understand biological interactions (. Chapter 12). The two broad types of adhesive materials encountered in wound healing are pressure-sensitive adhesives (PSA) and tissue sealants. The function of pressure-sensitive adhesives is to form an adhesive bond between tissue and biomaterial under the influence of pressure. Tissue sealants are liquids that convert to solid form at the tissue surface and in so doing form either an effective seal against fluid leakage or a bond between adjacent tissue surfaces. Structural analysis in handwritten mathematical expressions focuses on interpreting the recognized symbols using geometrical information such as relative sizes and positions of the symbols. Most existing approaches rely on hand-crafted grammar rules to identify semantic relationships among the recognized mathematical symbols. They could easily fail when writing errors occurred. Moreover, they assume the availability of the whole mathematical expression before being able to analyze the semantic information of the expression. To tackle these problems, we propose a progressive structural analysis (PSA) approach for dynamic recognition of handwritten mathematical expressions. The proposed PSA approach is able to provide analysis result immediately after each written input symbol. This has an advantage that users are able to detect any recognition errors immediately and correct only the mis-recognized symbols rather than the whole expression. Experiments conducted on 57 most commonly used mathematical expressions have shown that the PSA approach is able to achieve very good performance results.

Service innovations in retailing have the potential to benefit consumers as well as retailers. This research models key factors associated with the trial and continuous use of a specific self-service technology (SST), the personal shopping assistant (PSA), and estimates retailer benefits from implementing that innovation. Based on theoretical insights from prior SST studies, diffusion of innovation literature, and the technology acceptance model (TAM), this study develops specific hypotheses and tests them on a sample of 104 actual users of the PSA and 345 nonusers who shopped at the retail store offering the PSA device. Results indicate that factors affecting initial trial are different from those affecting continuous use. More specifically, consumers' trust toward the retailer, novelty seeking, and market mavenism are positively related to trial, while technology anxiety hinders the likelihood of trying the PSA. Perceived ease of use of the device positively impacts continuous use while consumers' need for interaction in shopping environments reduces the likelihood of continuous use. Importantly, there is evidence on retailer benefits from introducing the innovation since consumers using the PSA tend to spend more during each shopping trip. However, given the high costs of technology, the payback period for recovery of investments in innovation depends largely upon continued use of the innovation by consumers. Important implications are provided for retailers considering investments in new in-store service innovations. Incorporation of technology within physical stores affords opportunities for the retailer to reduce costs, while enhancing service provided to consumers. Therefore, service innovations in retailing have the potential to benefit consumers as well as retailers. This research models key factors associated with the trial and continuous use of a specific SST in the retail context, the PSA, and estimates retailer benefits from implementing that innovation. In so doing, the study contributes to the nascent area of research on SSTs in the retail sector. Based on theoretical insights from prior SST studies, diffusion of innovation literature, and the TAM, this study develops specific hypotheses regarding the (1) antecedent effects of technological anxiety, novelty seeking, market mavenism, and trust in the retailer on trial of the service innovation; (2) the effects of ease of use, perceived waiting time, and need for interaction on continuous use of the innovation; and (3) the effect of use of innovation on consumer spending at the store. The hypotheses were tested on a sample of 104 actual users of the PSA and 345 nonusers who shopped at the retail store offering the PSA device, one of the early adopters of PSA in Germany. Data were analyzed using logistic regression (antecedents of trial), multiple regression (antecedents of continuous use), and propensity score matching (assessing retailer benefits). Results indicate that factors affecting initial trial are different from those affecting continuous use. More specifically, consumers' trust toward the retailer, novelty seeking, and market mavenism are positively related to trial, while technology anxiety hinders the likelihood of trying the PSA. Perceived ease of use of the device positively impacts continuous use, while consumers' need for interaction in shopping environments reduces the likelihood of continuous use.
